Library of Russia Offers Views of Saint Pitersburg

The Library of Russia has digitized about 900 images of Saint Pitersburg (spelling it like they spell it on their site), grouped into two main categories: 1900-1917 and 1918-1940. They're available at http://www.nlr.ru:8101/eng/line/spbpcards/index.html .

Now, this is set up kind of unusually. At the front page you'll see at the top two selections -- 1900-1917 and 1918-1941. This first page features the 1900-1917 selection; click on the 1918-1941 page to get to the next set. Each page features a map with numbers on the left. At the bottom of the screen is a list of locations that correspond to those numbers. Click on a link and you'll get a list of pictures/postcards from that location. The page for the picture/postcard doesn't contain many details, but the pictures are good.

I was fascinated by the Ferris wheel at the Luna Park, the maps, and these amazing firefighting postcards. Don't miss the cards of the king of Italy's visit to Russia in 1902.
