Kansas Launches Charity Check Site

The state of Kansas has a site for checking charities registered to raise money in Kansas. It's available at http://www.kscharitycheck.org/ .

Searching is by simple keyword. A search for Service found what looks like a couple dozen results. Charities are listed by their name and sometimes by an "Also Known As." Click on the name of the charity and you'll get the name, postal address, and expiration date. You'll also get their gross receipts, fundraising expenses, and amount that went to charitable organization. Finally, you'll get the percentage of receipts that went to the charitable organization and the percentage that went to fundraising expenses. Some of those numbers are pretty depressing.

The site also has contact information for consumer complaints, a FAQ, information on solicitation law, and a couple of links.
