December 15, 2003Google Adds New "Search by Number" FeatureGoogle is now offering five ways to search for discrete types of classification numbers -- UPS tracking numbers, FedEx tracking numbers, FAA airplane registration numbers, patent numbers, and FCC equipment identification numbers. Three of these numbers require the use of a special syntax type format, but none of them require the customary : . Here are the new search offerings: UPS Tracking numbers -- Enter the tracking number directly, for example 1Z9999W999999999 . FedEx Tracking Numbers -- Enter fedex, a space, and then the tracking number, for example fedex 999999999999 . Patent Numbers -- Enter patent, a space, and then the tracking number, for example patent 5123123 . FAA Airplane Registration Numbers -- Enter the number, for example n199ua . FCC Equipment Registration Numbers -- Enter fcc, a space, and then the equipment number, for example fcc B4Z-34009-PIR . Now, the results of these lookups are not integrated into the search results. Instead each of these searches will provide a link at the top of the search results-- a link to track that UPS package or FedEx package or patent number or whatever. You'll also get usual search results. I asked if this new feature was included in Google's API but got no response; I suspect it's not.
