Search Engine Offers Web Search and Site Search

Where do they come up with these search engine names? Is there some kind of law that says the odder and more onomatopoeic the name, the greater chance of the search engine's success? Perhaps so. At any rate, let's talk about a search engine that not only keeps up the tradition of an offbeat name but also offers site search. The site is named Ay-Up and it's available at http://www.ay-up.com/index.htm .

Ay-Up has four tabs at the top -- Web, Directory, Geo-Locate, and News. It doesn't appear that Geo-Locate and News work yet, and Directory is the Open Directory Project, so I concentrated my interest on the Web tab. A simple search is on the front page, but you also have the option of a basic search (a series of boxes that explains several search options for Ay-Up, including STEMMING!) and an advanced search which allows you to specify page parts to search (title, description, etc.) and the ability to sort (and search) by date. (I'm guessing that's indexing date.) Search results include the name and description for a page, and an (undated) cache.

There doesn't appear to be a lot here yet, but Ay-Yup hopes to rectify that by offering free site search. If you've been looking for a third-party solution to site indexing, but found that other free services wouldn't index enough of your site, you may want to try this one; Ay-Yup will index up to 10,000 pages of your site. Get more details about that at http://www.ay-up.com/free_search.htm .

This site looks very Google inspired (check out the Luck Be With U button on the results page) and sometimes its information is a little confusing (under the Add URL page: "Support Ay-Up.com development - Send Us $5.00 - No money required." Whu?) But I'm excited to see a search engine offering so much in the line of advanced searching right off the bat, and that site search looks like a good thing. Worth a look.
