April 21, 2004Dates, On-This-Dates, and All Kindsa StuffYou know that little Ziggyesque statement about there being three kinds of people: those who make it happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. Though I suspect I'm in the last category I still enjoyed DateDex ( http://www.datedex.com/results.asp ), which provides information on all manner of upcoming dates and "on this day" type material. Yes, there are a bunch of categories on the front page, but linger a moment and check out all the information on the front page. There are sports events. There are date notations for the US, for the UK, Asia, and Africa. There are "recognition" days (this month is autism awareness month.) Once you've browsed around the front page then you can check out the categories, which include computing, birthdays, and government. There were subcategories for the categories I looked at, but the main listing page showed current and upcoming dates for that category. The birthdays category, for example, showed birth and death dates of actors, politicians, etc. The Country dates shows holidays for different countries. Entries are presented in tables; a "More" link shows a pop-up window for each event but often there's not a lot of information for each event. The site also offers ways you can add their content to your own site, and a very brief link list.
