April 27, 2004Hey! Huah! Book Recommendations! Good Gnod, Ya'll!If you've run out of books to read and are down to deciding between an old JC Penny's catalog and a copy of LANDO SACKETT that you've read eighty billion times, you'll appreciate the humor and book-recommending wisdom that is Gnooks ( http://gnooks.com/ ). Gnooks offers several literature-related things, as well as a forum, but what I liked was the book recommender, called Gnod's Suggestions. This asks you to provide the names of three authors you like. Seeking to mess with it, I specified Laura Joh Rowland, Elmer Kelton, and Italo Calvino. Gnod affably recommended several authors, including John Jakes, Larry McMurtry, James Joyce (?), and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It seemed to be touching more on individual authors than the authors as a group, so I tried something a little more traditional: Harry Turtledove, Eric Flint, and Orson Scott Card. These suggestions seemed more reflective of the group: David Weber, David Drake, John Ringo, Robert Louis Stevenson.. Robert Louis Stevenson? Oh, all right. Each author page gives you the opportunity to give feedback on the author (like, don't like, don't know), see writers related to that writer, find discussions related to that writer, or get a list of books by that author. A nifty tool.
