Database of Open Source Clip Art Launched

(Hat tip to GE for this pointer.) I'm not sure if this site has been official released yet; there's a limited amount of content with plenty of requests for more. At any rate there's a Open Clip Art Project either gearing up or on the go at http://clipart.freedesktop.org/ .

As you might gather from the name of the site, this is a project to generate an archive of free archive that can be used in software distributions, in artwork, etc. There are only a few dozen graphics here at the moment, and they're all available in SVG format. I had no idea what SVG was, and no SVG reader, but it turns out Adobe has one available (for Mac, Windows, Linux, Solaris) at http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html . Even after installing this I could only view the SVG images in IE.

Anyway, the listed items include logos, computer-related graphics, some arty stuff, standard clip-arty stuff, etc. To submit items you must read the file and style guidelines (actually there aren't any style guidelines yet), save your graphic in an accepted format (NOT gif or jpg), and upload it. Interesting. Wonder if it'll pick up steam?
