May 25, 2004Database of NCAA RecordsThe NCAA and Thomas Technology Solutions have teamed up to digitize the NCAA's archives of sports championship records. Currently the baseball, softball, and outdoor track records are online, with football and women's volleyball expected to be on the site in July/August. To access these records, start at http://www.ncaa.org/stats/ and choose one of the completed sports (the other sports will have stats, too, just not this database) and then choose the championship database. For example, you might choose baseball and then choose College World Series archives database. Once you've chosen the database you'll see that you can search any one of the currently-digitized sports. You must select a sport, but then you can select a year or range of years, a school, or do a name search for a student. I chose baseball and searched for Penn State across all years. I got eight results, from the 1952 season to the 2000 season. Choosing the 1973 season, I got a pointer to the college world series. From there I got a list of the 14 games, with an asterisk denoting in which games Penn State participated. (there were two.) If you click on any game in the listings, you'll get the complete stats for that game. There are also PDF files associated with some of the championships. In this case, the bracket (isn't that the 1972 bracket for the 1973 championships? Am I missing something?) press book (huge), and program (also huge). If you don't want to see the whole program, you can download the program cover by itself. If you're a college sports nut, you'll like this database. I can't wait until they're finished with the rest of it.
