June 03, 2004Get Hurricane Landfall EstimatesQuick, what's June 1st? Yes, it's Morgan Freeman's birthday. Yes, it's Potty Training Awareness month. What I was getting at, though, is that it's also the start of hurricane season, which extends until December 1. A new site is making available landfall estimates for different varieties of storm force winds over the next 50 years in 205 different counties, from Texas to Maine. The site is called the United States Landfall Probability Web site and it's available at http://www.e-transit.org/hurricane/welcome.html . The front page has several choices but you probably want the first one: "Interactive Landfall Probability Display." You'll get a map of coastline from Texas to Maine. Click on a zone (there are 11 of them) and you'll get a closer view of that area, dotted with stars. If you keep clicking now all you'll do is zoom in. Instead look in the upper-right corner of the map and you'll see some buttons. Click on the i button and then click on a coastal area. You'll get a popup window with lots of information about previous storms in the area as well as the estimates for further storms over the next 50 years. Check the FAQ for meanings of some of the abbreviations (NS = Named Storm, etc.) Posted in the following categories: Science-Meteorology | TrackBack
