June 14, 2004SortByDate Helps Track Keywords in Weblogs and News SitesIf my mail is any indication, the hot topic nowadays is how to use the power of RSS feeds to track specific topics instead of having to track specific blogs. SortByDate ( http://www.sortbydate.com) is sort of a pointer-engine; it gives you resources for news and 'blogs which sort by date, then generates a query and sends it to the appropriate site for you. Enter the query and then choose from the pulldown menu. You can choose current news (which looks like the default), and discussions and 'blogs. There are also other searches here, including search engines and reference works. When you choose what you want to search, the page will refresh with a list of search engines underneath the query box. Click on a search engine and a page will open with your a results page from the search engine you chose, with the query you chose. I like this conceptually; I would make a couple changes. First I would put all the sort by date items on one page under two headers, instead of dividing them by news and 'blogs. There are few enough of them that it a) wouldn't be a heavy load time and b) wouldn't offer an overwhelming number of items. Second, I'd have some kind of way of communicating new sources (RSS feed?) as this is an interesting way to explore new options in both the blogging and news communities.
