Google Announces Google SMS

Google announced yesterday Google SMS, a way for people with SMS-enabled phones to access Google information. More details on it are available at http://sms.google.com . After some goofing around and an uninformative call to my provider's technical support, I got it to work. It's a bit slow, easy to understand since so many people are trying it right now, but I'm very excited by the possibilities.

Here's how it works. Use an SMS-enabled cell phone to send a message to 46645 (Google says in their release announcement that you can also use "GOOGL on most mobile phones", but my provider doesn't support that.) Google takes the query and returns results to you via another message or series of messages depending on how many results your query got.

There are many different syntax you can use for finding stuff; Google has instructions on its site. Possible lookups include:

Google Local-type searching (pizza 90102 , tires boston)
Residential Phone # Searching (john doe 415)
Prices from Froogle: f (f ipod, f 0131471481)
Definitions: d (d sms)
Search results-- Just snippets, no links: g (g "SMS means")
Calculator -- Just enter the problem (2+2)
Area code lookup -- just enter the area code (415)
Zip code lookup -- just enter the zip (90210)

Google promises to make more features available "soon" and does have a sign-up for getting more information on updates. This is absolutely positively worth a look.
