Information Trapping for Tags: Thagoo

If you’re looking for more tag sites to do information trapping, check out Thagoo. It’s a tag meta-search site that offers RSS feeds for search results.

The site’s at http://thagoo.com/ . Search is extremely simple keyword. Your search results include page title, URL, where the tag was picked up, and how long ago the tag was updated. The sources I saw in the search results included Furl, BlueDot, BlogMarks, del.icio.us, BlinkList, My Web Yahoo, and MisterWong. You can sort the results by the most recent or the most popular.

At the top of the results page is also a link for an RSS feed. Unfortunately the feed only shows the link and the title of the page/site, not the source/popularity/time of addition.

Quick results, lots of sources, and an RSS feed. One I’m going to add to my information trapping toolbox…

Information Trapping for Genealogy

Family tree searchers out there? I heard about a site this week that lets you check for information on ancestors you’re searching.

Genealogy Agent, at http://www.genealogyagent.com , allows you to monitor genealogy sites for ancestors who might be proving a bit difficult to find. After you register (registration is free) you can enter details about your ancestor including nicknames and birth and death year (or range if you don’t know exactly).

Genealogy Agent will monitor several genealogy sites using different combinations of the information you’ve given, and send you e-mail reports when there’s new data to be had. Monitoring two ancestors for one year is free; additional ancestors cost $14.60 a year.

I’m going to have to test drive this to see what kind of results I get. But I did want to point out two good things about this site. First is the excellent FAQ that points to resources outside Genealogy Agent for certain types of searches. Second is the Network Sites listing, which is a category index of genealogy site recommended by registered users. Nice descriptions.

The person who put this site together, Doug Barry, has done several other potentially interesting genealogy sites, including Genealogy Search Help, Family Tree Searcher, and Genealogy Search Advice.

Information Trapping, Now In Skinny Syllabus Flavor

So there’s a professor named Scott Moore who teaches at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. And I think he’s a great fellow, mainly because he’s teaching a course called “Web-based Information Resources” and he’s using two of my books in his syllabus.

I’m not mentioning this merely to puff, but because in creating his Web site he has made a couple of very nice thin outlines of my books. You can see the Information Trapping outline here, while the Web Search Garage outline is here. The Web Search Garage one is more complete at the moment, I guess because he’s filling it in as he teaches. The WSG outline also has some nice quizzy-type questions at the end of each outline. Actually all the questions are lumped together on this page.

Basic outline and course notes are available at http://samoore.stikipad.com/bit330f07/show/HomePage.

If you want a concise overview of Information Trapping, check out his skinny outline. Very well done. I’m interested to see how far Dr. Moore develops it.

Good luck, BIT330 students! I hope you all get As.

Update: Dr. Moore informs me that the STUDENTS are creating the outlines and overviews of my books. They’re doing an excellent job!
